What time?!?

Sometimes your running buddy has scheduling conflicts. For instance, she needs to be somewhere quite important at 9:30ish, but you also have to get in 3 hours and 15 mintues of run time…

Bedtime came at 8:30pm, and surprisingly it wasn’t that hard to get to sleep at that hour. I guess it had been a rougher week than I thought. Anyway, up at 3am, the earliest I have ever gotten up for a run, I do believe, and at the ready by 4am. Yowza! Crazy Shawanda and Alan joined Robin and I, and off we set in to the darkness to get in our little over 14 miles.

Training runs vs actual races. I try to take it a bit easy on training runs. I count the time more than I count the mileage. I generally run faster in races and have the mindset that I can endure being out for this many hours, but I would love to not be, so I’m going to push myself as to avoid it. It works for me. This is why I’m not a fast nor competitive runner. I compete with myself every day that I get out and make myself do it. There’s no one else with whom I need to compete (look at that grammatically correct sentence).

So do I care that I only got 14 miles in 3:15 when I’ve run 13.1 in 2:35? Nope! You know why? On race day, I’m going to get out there and run and have fun and push myself and then go eat chicken and waffles. Boom! Can’t nobody bring me down after finishing a race (even when I hated the race and wanted to quit and cried during it) because thank the Lord it’s over and I can go eat and take a nap!

Part of our crew at the end of our run. We all managed to start at different times but a few of us finished together.

To gym or not to gym…

Robin and I got up this morning, met half way and decided to take a little run to the gym, that she recent became a member of, to work out and run back. From our starting point, it was right at 2 miles to the gym. Not too bad I don’t think. We get there and they don’t have a first time drop in free deal like most gyms. It’s $10.93 to try it out. Hmmm… Well, seeing as I don’t bring money with me when I run, I was kind of out of luck, but the girl did show us around and give us the low down on the gym itself. We sat down and discussed membership options. I’ll say that it’s a contender. If I sign up, I’ll tell more about it.

Needless to say, we got a 4.5 mile run and that’s about it. But, it’s not a bad start to this Labor Day.

Must get back in the habit.

Ugh! I feel like such a bum as of late. Things have happened in the running world, but summer time is sucking the life out of me. What happened to the girl who loved summer? Oh yeah, she didn’t get to beach it up this year and that has put me in an all around funk.

I did head to Chicago a few weeks ago and that was a blast. All the runners along the river…so jealous! Memphis has a river, I could run along it, but it’s still 1000 degrees here.

My sweet niece, Lexie, and I on the river.
So the workout conundrum begins. I have been a member of the fitness bootcamp, run by an actual Marine, for almost 4 years. I became a little complacent during the winter because of all the cold weather we received and lasted an unusually long time. There was a time when it had to feel like 29 degrees to go inside, by this past year that temperature requirement rose to 32 degrees. You know what? I like working out outside. I don’t mind the cold. I run when it’s 11 degrees, 29 is warm!

Anyway, inside workouts are somewhat limiting, it’s always the same things. Tidbit of information, I get bored real easy. Then the “snowstorms” started. Now, we live in the South and when it snows, things shut down. Our workout schedule follows the school schedule. If shuts down, so do we. That left for a lot of workout cancelations, a bit of weight gain, and a bit of general laziness in the mornings.

Spring came around and I tried hard to get back in the swing of things, yet I felt I was not being pushed anymore. There was no variety, there was no challenging workouts, and there was a whole lot of unnecessary ramblings. What use to be a solid 45-50 minute hard and varied workout became maybe 25-30 minutes of something I could do in my living room. In actuality, everything we ever did could be done in my living room and front yard, but it was the accountability and someone pushing me to do it that I enjoyed.

Needless to say, I’m on hiatus from bootcamp. There are a few of us that have decided to take that route and find alternative exercising means. I don’t particularity like gyms, so we’re not to that point yet, but we’ll see what the future holds. Right now, Alan and I are running and/or walking 3-4 weekday mornings. Saturday mornings are for longer runs.

To work out my core, which has become crap lately, I found a 30 day core challenge. Seriously, my core is so weak my back hurts from sleeping. The challenge is basically crunches, leg raises, and planks which steadily increase in number each day. By day 30 I’m sure to be dead. For some strength training, I’m doing a set of Swiss Army knives, which is a bootcamp circuit routine, before and after the core. All in all, it’s a very short workout I do at night. I’ve often said I wouldn’t workout at home, but it’s now a necessity and I’m doing it. Also, I told Alan he had to do it too, so he is.

In St. Jude news, we’re right at 3 months til race day. Next week is 3:15 and hopefully we’ll get about 15 miles. I’m looking forward to doing a full in my hometown. Indy this year will just be a half and I was planning on PRing, it’s a great fast course, but Robin is in a wedding that day so I’m running with Shawanda for her first half marathon ever! Gotta stick with her to get her through. No man left behind. I’ll PR it next year. We have to run it four times to get the complete medal set. Haha…

That’s it for the update I suppose. More to come later. I got a new iPad and am back for my last semester of school, for degree number two, so my head is back in the game. I took summer off from a lot of aspects of my life, apparently.

Also, I cut all my hairs off and sometimes wear it all silly like when I run. It’s fun and I’m usually delusionally goofy after runs anyway.

She does exist…

I guess I feel I haven’t had much of anything to post lately. We’ve hit 2:15 in our marathon training. It’s extremely hot and humid and awful. I swear last year was not this bad. The feels like temperature is between 105-115 everyday. So ridiculous it’s advised to not go outside unless necessary. But let’s get real, I’m not going to hunt down a dreadmill, so 5am runs will just have to do.

The past few runs have left me feeling a little less than stellar about my abilities. I get it’s the weather. Everyone looks miserable on the trail and it’s mostly shaded! But on the plus side, we have some runners who are making excellent strides. Fellow boot campers and new Buffalo Runners, Shawanda and Courtney, have run their longest distances ever! Shawanda at 10 miles and Courtney at 7.5. And poor Courtney, I don’t think she’s run over a few miles in her life. She is a complete trooper!

Yesterday was equal parts fun and equal parts exhausting. First, our 7.5 mile recovery run. We came across a cute little crawdad, whom I named Claude.  After the run, I headed to Overton Park’s Levitt Shell. There was outdoor yoga. I’m still not a fan of it, but I think it did some good. And it was a great community activity!

Once I conquered that, I headed home for a quick nap before the National Dance Day flash mob at Overton Sqaure. We learned a cute little dance and performed it for the watching crowd.  My roomie Heather and friend Nikki joined.
I was worn out after all that. So I naturally took a nap. I’ve come full circle. I need naps. I am fine with that fact.

After said nap, Alan and I headed to Target, Newks, and then back to the apartment to watch the DCI regionals on his new Chromecast. Prior to 2 1/2 years ago, if you’d asked me what drum corps was, I would have said that thing a few of my friends did after high school. Now…I am extremely well versed in all things Drum Corps. It’s pretty awesome actually.

I’m really hoping these runs will get better but I know they won’t. I’m simply preparing myself for a miserable summer but a hopefully incredible Memphis fall. Cross your fingers!

#LOVEWINS

Today’s run was quite wonderful. It was overcast, kinda breezy, and the discussions were so full of love and joy! Yesterday marriage equality became legal in all 50 states in the U.S! ☺️🌈

Love won. ❤️💛💚💙💜

Now I get not everyone is for marriage equality. That is fine. You don’t have to be, you have that right. But I am family with and friends with several gay and lesbian couples and I am for it! One of my running buddies this morning was beaming, BEAMING, at the outpouring of love and support for she and her partner and everyone else in the gay community. I love those two girls so much and I’m so happy to know that when they choose to get married, they can! How amazing is that?!? Quite amazing I tell you.

This ruling is about love. Love and the ability to be there for your partner in their time of need, to have family insurance coverage, to make decisions for their partner when they cannot. It’s about freedom and civil rights. It’s about equality.

Oh how I love love! ☺️

Here’s 6 sweaty Buffalo Runners, with giant smiles, and love in their hearts. What a great day. What a great weekend. ❤️
*RENT just so happened to be the soundtrack of today’s run*

Procrastination…

I am a total procrastinator. I’ll admit it. No shame. Now that I’m training for my second full marathon, it seems a little underwhelming. I’m sure that will change soon, but right now, it’s kind of “eh”.

So second training for St. Jude marathon completed last Saturday.    My little crew of folks are so awesome!

I’m trying to concentrate on getting faster. I’m trying to keep up the the dude in the back. My goal is to finish my marathon in 5:30. I’ll be happy with 5:45. I think if Alan and I stick together, or at least I stick to him, I’ll make it. Since we run together on weekdays, we’ve kind of adapted to each other and our pace is pretty similar. Although, I’m fully convince guys have an easier time than girls do when it comes to running, so if I keep up with him, I’ll be pretty stoked!

To reward myself after these awful, humid runs, I like to swing by the Ugly Mug and get an iced coffee.

I have tried a LOT of different coffee shops in Memphis and I can honestly say, hands down, they have the best coffee. Muddy’s and City & State are pretty fantastic, but I love some Ugly Mug. I was ecstatic to hear they are opened on Sundays now.

After the run, and coffee, Alan and I hit up the first annual Brazlian Festival. It was tiny, and adorable, and they had delicious food! Brazil Flavor is a small, locally owned Brazilian restaurant and grocery store.  Alan’s good friend and business partner Amy played the mandolin while we enjoyed the breeze and yummy treats.

I wasn’t hungry enough for the buffet, I will be back for that, but I had this great little street fair food called Coxinha (a fried dough ball stuffed with chicken and cheese). Who doesn’t love fried chicken cheesey goodness?!? And there was a yummy drink called Guarana Antarctica. It was a lightly sweet soda. Delicious! I don’t drink cokes anymore but I might make some exceptions. And yes, I say coke. I’m from the south. Everything is coke, just what flavor. 😉 it was a spectacular Saturday.

  Amy and her mandolin.

  Cute food!

I’m hoping this Saturday will be as entertaining. It better be!! Haha…

Buffalo Runners are at it again…

Saturday we started our St. Jude marathon training. We started with 1:15 and got in right at 6 miles. Not too shabby. We suckered some newbies in to running their first full with us too. I know. I know. I said I’d never do another full. Well I LIED! Ahahahaha…

Here’s our fun little group, gross and sweaty and awesome!!
I was unaware, while avoiding the bridge of death which has led to numerous almost falls, and one legit one, that we’d run across a beaver dam reproduction in the woods. Complete with some beavers for good measure.

After our fun run, Robin and I restarted our after marathon training ritual…POOL TIME! I had been waiting so very long for that moment. And it was really cold in that water!! But the great part about pool time is the pool side chats. I feel like I hadn’t had nearly enough marathon training buddy time. Well, it’s back! And I couldn’t be happier.

We discussed our time strategy for this marathon. My goal is to do 5:30. That’s a full 32 mins shaved off my first marathon time. That being said, we took a lot of pictures and two potty stops. I’d be happy with 5:45 though. I can do it.

First run in the books! I can’t wait for the next run…for the next 6 months of runs! Adios social life. It’s a good thing I love my running buddies. They’re about the only ones I get to see. ☺️

Today is…

NATIONAL RUNNING DAY!!! Yay! ☺️

This morning I managed to get my booty out of the bed and get in a quick 2.5 miles. My darling kitten, Marlowe, has this new thing. “I’m going to wake mom up every half hour, starting at 3am. EVERY MORNING. I have the loudest meow in history. It is sure to wake her up. Then, right before it’s time to get up, I snuggle up real close and want to be petted til I pass out.”

If she wasn’t so dang cute!

That being said, with very little sleep, I crawled out of bed and hit the road. I’ve been running without music for a couple months now, and I don’t really mind it much. Today though, I kind of wanted some tunes or maybe a podcast. Tragically, I could not find ANY of my headphones and I have like 6 pairs. Guess that means it wasn’t meant to be.

The humidity struck again. It’s been raining off and on for weeks here, so there’s always looming danger of a downpour or sweatfest because of said humidity. Guaranteed to lose a few more pounds though, so bring it on Memphis weather!

In honor on National Running Day, I posted a little picture of my quick saunter around the neighborhood. I included why I run as well. Why you may ask? Well…if alone (or even with a buddy because then I can vent) I can clear my head. I like to get my thoughts out. I also like to see my city before it wakes up, before there are people hustling and bustling about. I run because I get to see my friends and spend time with them because they really are more like family. And most importantly, I get to eat what I want (mostly)! ☺️

What (and why) did you do for national running day?

Oh the humidity…

Welp, it has officially hit Memphis, the dreaded humidity. It won’t leave now. Once it’s here, we’re in it for the long haul.

Today was the Heroes in Recovery 6K at Overton Park. I have run the course before, in a different race, but this race had us also going on the “limestone trail”. I didn’t even know that part existed and I’ve been to that park a million, a literal million, times. I really enjoyed it. I unfortunately did not enjoy the humidity, so that slowed me down, but I still did pretty ok I think. Kevin, bless him, stuck with me when I was all “can we walk in the sunny parts because I’m really hot”… He is the best. Towards the end, when the finish line was in sight, he wouldn’t let me slow down. No stopping! We must speed it up and bust it out! We managed to finish in under 40 minutes.

At the start line…we were raring to go!
And then we got really sweaty…

After the race, we scooped up our cheerleader Jenn, who registered and got lost making her way to the start ☺️, and headed to breakfast. Stone Soup is a great little locally owned eatery that caters to both meat eaters and vegitarians alike. I ate my weight in deliciousness.

A brief nap later and I was jonesing to get back in the beautiful weather. I headed back to Overton Park and sat amongst the trees drinking my Ugly Mug iced coffee and listened to some Brazillian tunes. I love that music. It’s Alan’s fault. 😊

 Yay Saturday! You’ve been awesome!

Vacation is over…

The time has come to get back in the swing of things. I feel like I haven’t had consistent weekend runs in forever. This week was the first hour and half run I’ve done in a long time. It felt good to be back on the Greenway. It looked different though. The vegetation is starting to grow back and over the trail. It almost looked like new and unfamiliar. We’d get to certain spots and groan about how we’d only made it THIS FAR?!? It’s amazing how having not run the usual route in a while makes you forget certain things.

I was happy to see my buddies again. It’s been a minute. We make each other better runners. I think that’s what you need in a group of buddies. There’s no competition with each other, only ourselves. Yes, we push each other to be better, but you never feel like you’re not good with what you’re accomplishing. For that I’m so thankful. I love my group. There’s only acceptance with us and if you can’t hang with that, you can’t hang with us. You’ll find our little group has people of all sizes, shapes, colors, orientations, beliefs, and personalities. It’s what makes us unique and what makes me love them all so very much. I don’t think I could be a runner anywhere else because I know without my support, I couldn’t do it on my own.

I went through my bibs and medals to get them all organized. I really feel like I’ve run more races than I have, apparently. But, I found, it’s really I just run a lot and I’ve become that person who only does 5Ks for races that really matter to me (or unless they have a cool medal). I hate to sound that way, but time is valuable and Saturday mornings need to be dedicated to getting mileage in the bank. Ugh. Yes. I’m that person. I’m also kinda poor so entry fees get expensive. But for now, I’ll keep adding to this collection, a few medals year.
